Hello, I am Dr. Sachiyo FUJITA-ROUND. I am a sociolinguist and educator, specialised in bilingualism and multilingualism in education. Currently, as a researcher, I am actively involved with language revitalisation in the Southern Ryukyu, Okinawa prefecture. However, it is a postgraduate course; there are not many sociolinguistic courses at ICU currently. For the first part of the course, we will learn the basic idea/concept of sociolinguistics. I will give you more details on the first class on Dec 7th.
This course provides a critical overview of aspects of language use in social and societal contexts by reading selected papers in the field of sociolinguistics and setting up students’ own projects.
Learning Goals （学習目標）
1. To learn about the major approaches to the study of language in society; to become familiar with key issues in micro-/macro-sociolinguistics.
2. To develop an in-depth understanding of major methodologies for sociolinguistics analysis; to be able to apply sociolinguistic concepts to real data (e.g., spoken & written data).
3. To develop an ability to participate in and lead discussions on issues in language in society.
4. To complete a written analysis of a key issue or problem in sociolinguistics.
